The majority of U.S. companies that operate abroad, sadly, do not have detailed, written and tested crisis management plans designed to cope with the threats of violent crime, terrorism, political unrest, extortion, natural disasters, business losses, fraud, kidnapping or other business disruptions. Particularly in developing countries, where the host government’s public safety structure is ineffective, foreign subsidiaries must plan for every foreseeable emergency, including how to communicate internally and internationally when electrical power and phone service is interrupted and cellular phones become dysfunctional.

Solution:Sleeping Bear Risk Solutions has developed a systematic approach to developing crisis management plans for our clients. This process begins with our meeting with key company or subsidiary representatives who would play a major role in the event of a crisis to determine foreseeable threats, risk exposure and working assumptions in the event of a crisis. We then review any company or subsidiary crisis management plans, policies or procedures to determine what previous planning can be integrated into a comprehensive crisis management plan. Based upon information we’ve collected, we then prepare a first draft for management to review followed by appropriate revisions. Subsequently, we schedule a series of tabletop exercises in a one-day testing of the plan, at which point the lessons learned in the test are worked into a final plan that is presented to management for dissemination to key elements of the company.
