Before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Sleeping Bear Risk Solutions’ managing director, Ed Lee, headed up a successful security consulting practice known as The Lee Group, which operated from 1990 to 2001. During this period of time, The Lee Group published two weekly serialized newsletters, The Global Weekly Advisor, and The Latin American Advisor, which provided subscribers focused analyses and forecasts in terms of criminal and political risks abroad. Additionally, The Lee Group published another newsletter, The Security Advisor, which specialized in keeping subscribers abreast of single-issue extremism, specifically environmental terrorism. The Lee Group also published a publication for business executives entitled A Personal Safety Guide for International Travelers, which was adopted by over 800 multinational organizations. Under Sleeping Bear Risk Solutions, an updated version of the safety guide entitled Staying Safe Abroad in a Post-9/11 World, will be released in September 2006.

Apart from publications, The Lee Group also delivered security consulting services to such organizations as the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Overseas Security Advisory Council, the American Chambers of Commerce in El Salvador and Guatemala, the United Nations, and 75 of the Fortune 500.

Following the events of 9/11, Mr. Lee was asked to return to Federal service in Washington and accept a senior full-time position with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security (Office of Antiterrorism Assistance) where he made major contributions to the Global War on Terrorism. In April 2006, Mr. Lee again retired from the U.S. Department of State and returned to his home in Traverse City, MI where he formed a new consulting practice, Sleeping Bear Risk Solutions.
